How do I add that slick, glossy, pop-up Search Bar that Realmac has?
Posted: 17th December 2008 05:46 PM

Using Realmac’s site for a while now (great software btw guys) and was wondering how it’s possible to add that great-looking Search bar you have, to my own site.  I know I can add the RapidSearch Plug-In, but - and no offense - I’m not crazy about it’s look & feel, or the way it forces you to a separate search page.  I want a Lean & Mean search bar… like yours.

I’m sure if I was a RW guru I could figure it out - I’m assuming it’s written in AJAX, but being a newbie here, not sure how I would accomplish/access this myself.

So a few people have read this question… but no replies?  I can’t be the only one interested in doing this… can I?  Anyone got any ideas yet?

You are right many are interested but we don’t know and apparently those who know have not seen the question or not answered it. I am with you I would love to know how to make it.
Thanks for asking it.
Please people in the know help.

Hi,

I don’t have this answer myself, as I assumed it was part of the Expression Engine Forum being used here, and not something created in RapidWeaver.

There are some snippets for search bars but they all rely on external search engines, giving you the issues you say you don’t like.

This is why I would guess you haven’t had too many answers. I have used Google tools to make a search inside a site, but it always comes back looking like a google page!

with best regards,
Karn.

So… I’m still in the dark about the Realmac search bar.  I did try going over to the Expression Engine site - but couldn’t seem to find any relevant info over there.  And sorry Karn, I just couldn’t make heads or tails out of Google Tools.

I also tried to view the source code for the page (after I click on the magnifier symbol) but as I’m no code guru - far from it - I couldn’t figure out what to do with it.  I did do a page search for the word “search” and one area was highlighted quite a bit, but it didn’t seem right to grab the code from there (besides, I wouldn’t even know where to put it to make it work right).

As far as the results go, it’s no big deal to have a Results Page (Google-looking or not) I just wasn’t crazy about RapidSearch making you click search, then taking you to a separate search page (where you type in your keywords), then going to the results… it’s an extra “two” steps… ugh… too clunky.

Well, when you find out be sure to send it my way as well. I would have asked but there are just some things that seem to always be unanswered. I don’t blame anyone as it is most likely custom javascript which the designers won’t want to give away freely. Perhaps someone someday will make a page to gear towards all these things that could be integrated into a RW project but aren’t in the forums.

Hello web-wax,

FYI, Elixir Graphics’ new Float theme has something very similar built-in as standard.

Yes… thanks for that.  I did notice that theme too a while back - in fact, I bought it hoping I could somehow strip the code from it to use the search bar on my preferred theme.

Alas… I don’t have the skill to do this (nor the time.. lol).  Does anyone know if this is possible?  I guess the question also begs… is it even ethical to try?

Hi there.
I came across two possible answers. I know they’re not the original but might be workable…

First is in the ‘Miscellaneous’ section of the http://www.shadowbox-js.com/ page. Click on ‘Simple Form’ and see.

Maybe we could try this workaround.

Secondly is an idea I had while playing with the ’Add Zoom to Image via CSS‘ feature in this thread.
Let me know if you try. I don’t have the focus to work on it right now. Too busy just getting my search to work correctly first.

Yes, I’m sure it’s possible and definitely ethical to try. Which is why I attempted it one long rainy weekend a couple of months ago. With only limited success, I may add, using Flowplayer’s Overlay, and jQuery TypeSearch. My stumbling block was positioning the overlay with my rather modest understanding of jQuery. Then because of the growing number of requests for a search option at RapidWeaver Central I settled on a compromise using RapidSearch and Flowplayer’s jQuery Overlay. It’s functional, but I’m still not happy with it as a solution and fully intend to persevere with this ‘challenge’ sometime soon… even though that may not be a breath-holding kind of soon.

Well… it looks like our “impassioned pleas” haven’t gone unnoticed… lol.  We now have a popup search bar available to us!  I haven’t had the chance to play with it yet, but hope to very soon.  Looks like a fun little project as I continually evolve my website.  Very cool.

There’s a lot of instructions to make it work - but they seem well laid out and easy to follow.  If anyone hasn’t seen it yet:

You should take a look at this option, its one i have used on a recent i built, here is the thread discussing it, its called The Seeker.  http://www.realmacsoftware.com/forums/index.php/forums/viewthread/20726/

Here is a link to my site showing how I implemented it:

Hi Mark,

Here’s a couple of tips for your Seeker. In the Searchbar Input Field CSS, you can nudge the Input Field down a pixel (or two) to center it perfectly. For instance:

html>body .search {
    position
relative;

top10px;
}

Also, among other improvements in the forthcoming update, is the inclusion of another piece of code for the Search Input Field — kindly submitted by Jeroen Ransijn of jssrdesign — which hides the blue outline when you click inside the input field. (This also works for the text fields on contact form pages.) Makes for a much slicker overall effect.

textarea:focusinput:focus {
outline
none;
}

By the way, Outlet Purse is looking really cool — and I echo Vasily’s critique, even though I’d argue it’s more Mulholland Falls than Mulholland Drive!
