Hi Everyone
We’ve been hard at work on a new build of Socialite and today we’re pleased to make it available for testing. Before you run and download it however, please take the time to read through this entire post. It contains a number of really important things that you need to be aware of!
You will need to sign in to Twitter and Facebook accounts again
In this new build of Socialite, you will be asked to re-authorise for any Twitter or Facebook accounts you previously added to your copy of Eventbox. This is due to the fact that your login credentials are being re-authenticated against Socialite’s API keys - not EventBox’s - and need your permission to access your data. It’s a one-time, and unavoidable, process.
A future build of Socialite will also require re-login to Flickr, however in this build any uploads are made using the Eventbox API key.
Changes to Twitter Login
We’ve moved over to use a slightly different method of authentication for Twitter: OAuth. The idea behind OAuth is that applications should not be asking for your username and password directly. To that end, when you add a Twitter account we show a webview to enable you to go to the Twitter Web site and sign in. Once signed in, you’ll be shown a numeric PIN code that you are asked to enter into Socialite.
To make it super-handy for you, we actually scrape the page and find the PIN code on your behalf when you click Continue and auto-fill it in the PIN entry sheet. You can also authenticate in your preferred browser if you feel more comfortable entering your credentials there.
Existing Eventbox or Multibox Users
If you’ve been using either EventBox (which only allowed one service) or MultiBox (which allows as many services as you like) this new build will migrate your details to a new library format. Make sure you have backed up your EventBox data before downloading this build! as once you move over to this new build of Socialite you will not be able to move back to EventBox.
This is still a beta build
We’re still working on a number of Socialite fixes and improvements, along with tweaking how the application works. As it is still a beta, there may be bugs in the application. Should you come across any, please let us know (via email: team at realmacsoftware dot com) so that we can fix them! Whilst we continue to listen to feature requests for Socialite, version 1.0 is now ‘feature locked’ and we will not be adding any new services or features before the 1.0 release. We will of course continue to add them after the launch in 1.x updates, however!
Download Socialite 1.0 beta 2
If you’re happy with the risks of using beta software, download Socialite Beta 2 here!
On behalf of everyone at Realmac, thanks for your patience for this build. We’re working really hard to ensure there are as few hiccups as possible in the transition of EventBox to Socialite, and whilst the above items may be a small inconvenience they do only need to be done once.
Kind Regards,
Nik
