Socialite locks up all my apps
#31.  Posted: 18th December 2009 05:51 PM

I’ve been doing some tests, and the problems that the present is to add an account of
twitter, without it the system freezes. I hope that you will be useful to search
a solution

Okay… I caved and installed the latest version… guess what....

The dock is frozen and it is beachballing.

As you can see, there are 2 twitter accounts, one flickr, one facebook and eight direct RSS feeds.

I may be able to connect to the machine when it is in that state through terminal on another machine if someone can give me instructions.

“Our signs point to it being to do with folks who have literally thousands of events coming in. We’re in the process of ensuring that we have accounts with Twitter etc that replicate those heavy data users for our testing, and we’ll of course be continuing to work on these issues post 1.0.2.”

Just an fyi, I experienced the freezing on a number of occasions, and I typically would have less than 200, maybe sometimes a bit more events coming in per day across Twitter, FaceBook, and Flickr accounts (I have one each).

Hi Guys

Thanks for your messages. We’re going to be continuing to look into this in the New Year. We’re not been able to replicate it in our testing, however we will continue to look into this upon our return into the office.

Thanks!

We’re not been able to replicate it in our testing…
Nik

Nik, I’d be happy to replicate it for you on my new 17” MacBook Pro if you would be gracious enough to provide the round trip airfare to Brighton.

Smile

Have a wonderful Christmas break with your family and remember, everything will be okay in the end; and if it’s not okay, it’s not the end.

I’ve got the same issue on a Mac Pro ( 8-core/8GB/10.5.8 ) using Growl. After a few hours most apps lock up when Socialite is running Safari, Mail, Firefox, iTunes and a few others. Surprisingly Chrome doesn’t lock up and is one of the few applications that can be launch when this happens. I don’t get this lock up when Socialite isn’t running.

It’s especially annoying when the machine needs a password from a wake from sleep, as it stop the password entry dialog box from appearing.

I’ve noticed that Socialite has removed the silent button that Eventbox used to have that used to stopped Growl notifications, I wonder if it has anything to do with that?

I have Flickr, Facebook and two Twitter accounts (though the second one is very quiet and protected from the public view)

I hope you get this sorted soon.

So… I’m going to take a wild guess here, because this has happened to me with the mac and networking before.  Some apps will lock up the mac when the internet connection is interrupted.  Used to happen to me with another app.  This happens to me all the time on my work network, which tends to drop a lot.

I’m on mac os x 10.5.8, and I DO not run growl.

The only thing I run concurrently with socialite on a regular basis is Firefox.

I’m also having this stupid issue.
I’m using socialite 1.0.2.
The programs that are running are Growl, Firefox, Mail, Itunes, Ical, Dropbox, Textexpander, Evernote and most of the times Photoshop and Illustrator.

I’m not really bothered by the fact that the app crashes. What bothers me is that it can’t be forced quit!! and that I have do a hard reset.

I don’t care how this happens, but as far as I know the great thing from a Mac is that when a program crashes, all the other programs keep working fine. Except for Socialite, socialite is the only program ever made me hard reset my Mac. And it happens A LOT!
The stupid thing is, there is no alternative to Socialite. I’m using eventbox from the very beginning and I’m totally used to the program running my flickr, GReader with about 800 feeds and two twitter accounts.

At this moment I decided to stop using Socialite because I don’t want my Mac to suffer from hard resetting multiple times a day.

I was absolutely enthousiastic about eventbox and recommended it to a lot of people but you greatly disappointed me.
It shouldn’t take months to solve the biggest issue on your software.

Been having the same problem here. I think the issue is somehow related to mail as we are all running mail at the same time. Eventbox never had this problem even though I left it on all day and had more updates coming in than Socialite has now. Socialite crashes within a couple hours of running and brings down the whole system. Force quit doesn’t work and it can’t be killed from the terminal.

Yes, it happens when you leave it opened for a long time… I’m using a laptop and hibernate it all the time, so the app can run for more than few days sometimes before it freezes. The temporary fix for me is to quit it periodically, after reading the updates… But yes, it shouldn’t be like that.

Having the same problem here.

Since it happened a number of times, I had to (sigh) quit using Socialite. I’m back to using Seesmic Desktop and NetNewsWire. Thankfully they don’t hang my whole computer.

Hopefully a fix will soon be found?  ...pt

So, rereading through all replies to this thread in which Socialite locks up and requires a hard reset (i.e. cannot be force quit, quit from terminal or Activity Monitor), I notice that everyone who has posted their OS version has been using 10.5.8. One person mentioned 10.6, but indicated that Socialite could be force quit. Not everyone has posted their OS version, but many have, and it seems to be a common thread.

After upgrading my machine to 10.6.2 for unrelated reasons, this problem seems to have gone away. Perhaps this could tell us why the RealMac team has not been able to reproduce this issue on their machines? Is there anyone who is having the hard-reset-after-a-couple-of-hours issue that is using some iteration of Snow Leopard?

I have been running Socialite under 10.6.2 for over 24 hours with no issues, growl notifications on.

Nope, I’m running Snow Leopard and it still happens. I believe, it doesn’t happen that often, but got it few times Sad

The last time it happened, I was able to force quit it from the  › Force Quit menu. Then all the apps and the dock were unlocked.

@PhilipTobias: yes, I use Seesmic on my Android phone. It is awesome! Not even going to try it on Mac, as it requires Adobe AIR, which I don’t like.

For some reason I’m thinking it might be related to Growl. At my limited amount of knowledge on the technical part, that’s all I can figure.... the amount of growl notifications coming in every time each service refreshes. I know *sometimes* (very rarily) when I have NetNewsWire running all day long and if I let a ton of articles accumulate in the app, it can kinda bog down mac os x leopard when the screen turns black and it asks for my password… that only lasts around 5 seconds though, at WORST. Socialite, however, yes.... I’ve experienced the same problem you all are having with the inability to Force Quit, and yes all apps are frozen, total system freeze and I had to turn my mac completely off and restart it manually. I’ve only let that happen once. Ever since that first time, I’ve always just started socialite and then closed it after I read what I wanted to. Can’t expect someone to let an app run if it’s going to do that much damage to your OS, right?

Hopefully this problem is fixed quick.
