Socialite locks up all my apps
#46.  Posted: 13th January 2010 03:39 PM

I’m having the same problem. I’ve never had an app lock up my ENTIRE system. I used Eventbox often and never had this issue. I’d love to see this problem fixed in Socialite.

I’d like to use it again.

I’m running 10.6.2 with Socialite 1.0.2 but even before this version, I get this problem all the time. I may only get 5 items from a refresh, but everything will lock until it’s done whether I’m updating one service or all (1 Google Reader account, 1 twitter account, 1 flickr account). I’m not allowing it to use Growl anymore and the system lock I get is just unacceptable. period.

I get this nasty problem too. Socialte locks all the whole apps that’re running at the same time I open Socialte. This situation is unacceptable, like fiz said before.

I’m having the same issue everybody else seems to be having. I’m running:

OS X 10.5.8
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2
4 GB RAM
667 MHz

Apps I commonly have open:
Mail
Firefox and/or Safari
Adium
AccountEdge 2009
Dreamweaver
Daylite
Preview
Transmit
TextEdit or TextSoap
transmit
time machine

I haven’t gotten as far as disabling growl, but see that others have and it doesn’t seem to make a difference. Will try now and reply if there’s a change.

I’m bummed because I really love this app much more than tweetdeck, but it’s killing my productivity.

Thanks!

Hello...anyone at Realmac?

Hello, hello....???

You guys ever gonna answer this thread? Still having problems replicating the forced crashes? Want my version of Socialite? I can take it out of my trash and send it to you. No good to me, just completely mucks up my Mac. I really don’t want to beta test anymore.

Would love an update. Potentially a great app but it would be nice to hear something other than the sound of silence.

Hello Realmac,

As an employee of a software company, I understand the challenges of fixing bugs, especially when they’re difficult to recreate.  For our company, enlisting the help of users works wonders.  Other software companies have also enlisted my help independently to help them recreate issues which has greatly expedited the fix.

I would recommend you see if any users are willing to help you by sending logs, installing special builds of Socialite, etc.

Thanks,

Josh

Hi guys!

The same here. Socialite is open all the time. Sometimes when i click the dock icon to read new feeds it freezes for 10 - 20 seconds my Mac. After that, Socialite displays a broken window like this and i have to shut down and start the app again. After the freeze, the Mac works normally.

It’s like Socialite is using all the Mac’s resources to do “something”. The console shows absolutely nothing related for the time of the freeze.

10.6.2
Socialite
Mail
iTunes
Illustrator

I’d never installed growl and i disabled all grown notifications in Socialite. And btw.: After a few days (like today) i’ve to remove and add the twitter accounts because of the log-in issue. I’ve done this 5 times after it appears the first time.

Cheers from Germany

Mario

If it helps; we have upgraded our CAD software so I could upgrade the OS to 10.6.2 and I haven’t had any crashes since.

I am, however, not prepared to run Socialite whilst I am working (90% of the time) because I can’t risk a crash.

Same problem here, sometimes I cant even open the program without it freezing up!

Macbook Pro 1,1
2.0ghz Core Duo
2GB Ram
120Gb HDD
Mac OS X 10.6.2

Not the fastest computer in the world but it had no problem with Eventbox.
Open applications vary depending on what I am doing but usually:
Mail
Safari
Adium
iTunes
Terminal
Textmate
1Password 3
Socialite

I also sometimes use:
Firefox (3.6)
Pages
Numbers
CoverSutra
TextEdit
Preview
Transmit
etc.

I keep the applications as up to date as I can.

Only have 1 Twitter and 1 Facebook account setup and I don’t get more than 150 or so events in a 24 hour period.

I would be willing to try out special builds or send logs if it would help to narrow down the problem!

Has this been fixed in 1.0.3? I can’t use socialite until it is. It’s not worth risking a hang and loosing data. Has anyone found a workaround? Eventbox worked. What broke when transitioning to socialite?

It’s definitely not fixed in 1.0.3! I’m using again the NetNewsWire/Tweetie combination until this is fixed. Socialite crashes many times a day and i use my Mac for work too.

Btw, it’s really so hard to give us the possibility to organize the feeds alphabetically? I’m not sure, but in Eventbox this was possible. And Eventbox doesn’t crashed all the time ...

Cheers

What broke when transitioning to socialite?

We’re still looking into the reports, however the code for Socialite is - by and large - the same code from Eventbox (Multibox). We’re working with the original developer to improve the performance, and plan to make performance improvements for the next update [though, as 1.0.3 is just out, it’s not going to be available right away - we’re just starting work on the next update].

Thanks

I’ve seen you pin the blame on the eventbox code multiple times.  The funny thing is, I never had the problems mentioned in these threads when I ran eventbox - and I had -more- accounts than I do right now.  Right now I have one twitter, once facebook, and two rss feed accounts.  When I ran eventbox, I had one each of twitter and facebook, 3 flickr accounts, and a half dozen or so rss feeds.  Oh - and I was able to make use of the “recent” grouping which you guys removed from socialite (supposedly for performance reasons), without any performance issues.

If you guys hadn’t broken using eventbox entirely, I would downgrade (upgrade?) back to eventbox until these issues were resolved.

In Realmac’s defense, they are talking about Multibox (which was the beta the original developer was working on before selling to RM). A lot of these issues with performance had cropped up in the Multibox builds (I was a beta tester), so they’re not shifting blame just to shift blame. There was a huge difference in code between the last stable Eventbox builds and the last Multibox builds that are now the foundation of Socialite. It’s frustrating, but we’d be in a similar boat if Cosmic Machine were still the sole dev and not just consulting with RM.

In other (good) news;

Since I ‘side-graded’ to Snow Leopard I accidentally ran Socialite all day and it seemed to work. I have been running it all day for a couple of weeks now. I did have a massive problem with Vectorworks last week, but that is probably 99% their fault, though they are looking into the corrupt file now.

Is everyone else still having problems?
