Socialite and Dropbox — syncing Socialite data using Dropbox across multiple Macs
Posted: 19th November 2009 04:11 PM

I’m using Dropbox to sync my Socialite data across multiple Macs.

Currently, I have ~/Library/Application Support/Socialite shared across multiple machines. It works fine on my main machine (since it’s this machine’s Socialite folder I put on Dropbox) but if I use Socialite on any other Mac (using the same Socialite data), it looks like the oAuth tokens are all messed up and I can’t use my Twitter accounts. I get the usual Twitter authentication screen but without anything on the page…

So, is there a way to make multiple Macs using the same Socialite SQLite database?

Thank you!

Hi there

There’s no way to sync libraries currently, and we don’t plan to offer this support in the near future. As OAuth tokens etc are not stored in your library (they’re stored in the Keychain as they should be) syncing accounts between two systems is more complex than just syncing the SQL database.

Thanks!

Nik

Hi Nik,

Thanks for the fast reply! I finally found a way to do it! I created a new keychain and put all Socialite’s twitter.com entries in it. I then use Dropbox to sync that keychain across all of my Macs.

It works perfectly!

Well, this is different that what i was answered by Cosmic machine just before buying it, saying it was important for me in order to buy or not : “We have plans to provide Mac-2-Mac syncing in the future. I cannot provide you with a timeframe but we’re definitely doing it.”

So yes, it’s doable with dropboxes, but a build-in syncing solution appears just to be plain logical on such a software.

I agree with that and I really miss the possibility of easily syncing my personal and work macs… I understand that this doesn’t work in Socialite, because you switched to Twitters OAuth login, but I don’t like to do the Keychain hussle. For now I’m using two different Socialite services for the same Twitter account, but that’s just a fallback until Socialite gets a real sync - hopefully soon.

Whilst I can understand your desire to have this implemented, we’re not the Cosmic Machine unfortunately. We’re not looking to implement this in Socialite as it stands right now. Beyond 1.0, it’s something we may look into, but it’s not really something we’re looking into doing in the shorter term, I’m afraid.

Well, you mean, you bought Eventbox from Cosmic Machine but are not interested in adressing things Cosmic Machine said they’ll do for their clients ? I can understand technology changes and all, but dismissing announced choices like this isn’t fair.

I don’t think it is unfair. They’re not saying “no” to you, but “not right now”, so please be patient.
