Socialite 1.0 Beta 3 Now Available
Posted: 20th November 2009 03:31 PM

Hey Everyone!

We’re excited to make Socialite Beta 3 available for your testing today. There’s been a number of changes since the last beta, as well as a new feature, so please read the entirety of this post before downloading the new beta!

Dropping Support for OneRiot, Identi.ca and Reddit

In order to allow us more development time on features for the most commonly used services in Socialite (most notably Twitter) we’re removing OneRiot, Identi.ca and Reddit support in this beta. I should state now that we have no plans to remove any further services from the application, and all the other services found in Beta 3 will remain so!

Twitter List support

As Twitter Lists are available to all users, we’ve added in preliminary List support to Socialite. We don’t have any plans to add List creation, editing or removal at this time. Due to limitations in the Twitter API, we’re only able to synchronise lists that you have created to the sidebar right now. If you have subscribed to other people’s lists, they will not currently appear in the sidebar - however if Twitter’s API changes to allow this in the future we will of course bring this into Socialite.

The graphics for the Lists feature are still non-final, however we wanted to get this feature into your hands as soon as possible!

Facebook Authentication

In this new build of Socialite, we’re using Facebook’s new Connect API to sign you in. This means you’ll need to re-authorise your account again. Whilst we’re aware of this being the second time you’ll need to do this for Facebook in as many betas, these are changes that we simply have to make.

Flickr Authentication

In this new build of Socialite, we’re using all-new Socialite API keys for Flickr. As a result, you will need to re-authenticate in order to access your Flickr stream. Whilst I appreciate this is a minor annoyance, this is the final service we need to switch to Socialite-specific API keys.

What’s New in Beta 3?

• Twitter List support
• Removed OneRiot, Identi.ca and Reddit services
• New Flickr API keys, that will require re-authentication
• New Facebook Connect sign-in that will require re-authentication.
• Fixed an issue that prevented Facebook Status updates from refreshing.
• Entirely re-worked sidebar with improved folder management.
• Changes to the Twitter service settings, with changes to reply behaviour.
• Reworked Contextual menus for services.
• Feeds service is now known simply as RSS.
• Much-improved Mac OS X Leopard support.
• Changes to Twitter authentication to avoid frozen authentication views.
• Threaded conversations are now back on Flickr, Twitter and Facebook! Hurrah!
• When subscribing to an RSS feed, if you have one account setup the feed will be automatically added to it. If you have more than 1, you’ll be asked to select which RSS account / service you’d like to add the feed to.
• Numerous under-the-hood changes.

If you’re experiencing issues

Please follow these steps if you’ve updated from an old build of Eventbox, and running into problems. Otherwise, please report bugs in this thread!

If you’re happy with running pre-release software on your Mac, please download Beta 3 here and put it through its paces!

A note about re-authentication

As mentioned previously, we’ve had to make a fair few changes that change the authentication systems in the app. This beta (barring any bugs) should bring to an end the requirement of reauthenticating new accounts. Thanks for your patience in this matter: it’s something we simply had to do, and know it’s been a little bumpy along the way.

On behalf of everyone at Realmac, thanks for your patience and understanding!

Kind Regards,

Nik

Yes! However, as the Retweet feature was only made available yesterday (along with the relevant APIs) we’ve not been able to fit it into this beta. Look for it in a future beta, however Smile

Thanks!

Ouch, my Unread folder is unusable.  Focus indicator has disappeared, and messages are disappearing as soon as I click on them to focus them/mark them as read…

I’m also not seeing my Twitter lists anywhere… how/where should they show up?

How do I remove lists from the app without delete them from twitter itself? its annoying seeing people in my twitter timeline that I don’t actually follow.

Hmm, and now having removed my Twitter account to see if re-adding it helps… I can’t re-add it.

EDIT:  Hmm, okay, just seemed to take about ten minutes to pop up the authentication for the new account.  And now it’s taking another ten to download my tweets, while Nambu refreshed straight away.

EDIT: Actually, it never did download my tweets for the re-added account, just spun forever.

Right now, there’s no way to remove lists from the application. We do a straight sync with Twitter to download your lists from Twitter, and we’re not likely to offer a way to remove lists locally [though we may revisit this after 1.0, depending on how folks are using the Lists feature]

Thanks!

I’m pretty disappointed Reddit support was removed. While I had barely ever heard of or used OneRiot or Identi.ca, using Socialite to pull in Reddit articles was one of the reasons I purchased EventBox in the first place. Any plans to reintroduce support?

I was hopping it would be as simple as unchecking it like I’ve done for my flickr prefs having “interestingness” not show. Guess i’ll go delete all my list from twitter until its added then.

Confusing “Unread” behavior

I was about to report this as a bug, but now I realize what is happening so it WAD but not as it should IMHO.

I accidentally clicked on a #hashtag in my Unread stream. This took me to the search for that hashtag. No problem. But when I went back to my “Unread” all I saw was the hashtag search results. I thought the UI had gotten stuck. Then I scrolled and saw some of my other stuff mixed in and I realized that it was including the unread hashtag search results in the Unread group, which I wasn’t expecting and really don’t want. I’d be interested to know if others are finding such functionality useful. I mean, if I save a search explicitly, then yes, I want to see the search results mixed in. But I don’t think searches should be saved by default. The same thing applies to when I accidentally clicked over to another user’s profile. Now that is stuck in my sidebar and polluting my unread results. I think it should require an explicit save operation in order for those to be added to the sidebar, otherwise it’s the fast track to a frustratingly crufty experience.

Window Close Behavior on Mark All as Read

I like the concept of the “close the window when I mark all as read” but I find it frustrating that it doesn’t operate on the application level. I frequently mark a group read and then want to move on to another group. I’d like to see this behavior changed to “If I click ‘Mark all as read’ and there is no other unread item in Socialite, close the window” but, y’know, worded less verbosely. Smile

Many of the bugs were fixed, so we’re more or less back to where things were with the last build of EventBox-thanks.

However…

1. Despite my preferences indicating otherwise, any and all unread search items get added to the Unread folder. That’s a problem.

2. My one Twitter list isn’t showing up, even though Seesmic finds it just fine. Not a big deal, but I imagine it would be a huge deal for others

3. Now I’d like to see more features to at least match what I can do with Seesmic (which has a crappy UI and bad scrolling compared with Socialite/EventBox, but at least does much more and has a rapid development timeline):

---Being able to simultaneously post to both Twtitter and FaceBook (not having to type #fb really saves space in some tweets)
---Ability to see FB posts that are links, etc.
---A better UI for FB photos. I hate having 10-50 individual unread items that are individual photos someone uploaded, and then having to open new windows for each photo. Is there any way to aggregate photo uploads from one user and use the up or down arrows to navigate from one photo to the next in the same window?
---I’d love to have it where if I click on a link within a post on Google Reader it opens in a tab (see NetNewsWire) rather than having to go to my browser
---any of the remaining things I posted previously in the support forum about improvements

Don’t get me wrong-I’m glad things are at least back on track. But based on a quick search of Socialite or EventBox on twitter, many of us have ditched Socialite for other apps, and you’re going to have to at least gain parity with those to get many of us back. We’ve lost confidence, pure and simple. There are many good things about Socialite (although the new name, to put it bluntly, sucks-it’s as bad a name as “tweetie”). I like the smooth scrolling and the OS X-centric UI. I like being able to post through a shortcut without having to switch to the app. Unread items is nice, although it was better when it didn’t list every new item in a search. But I don’t get a sense that RealMac can develop at anywhere near the pace of Seesmic nor will it constantly innovate. On the other hand, Seesmic seems more focused now on Windows development-their new non-AIR app is for Windoze, not Mac, and who knows if they’ll develop a Mac version. That could sway many of us back to Socialite for good. So you have a window (no pun intended) of opportunity-please use it to everyone’s advantage. Thanks.

Last one for a little bit I promise: Why does selecting an item in my stream automatically put that person’s username in the text area as a reply? Shouldn’t I need to tell Socialite that I want to reply to that person?

That behavior, which drives me nuts as well sometimes, has been present all the way back in EventBox.

I had to trash both the plist and Sociolite Application Support folder to get the app to launch. Working well now.

Socalite is worthless without the EventBox “Recent” mode. In Socialite the only way to view all items together is “Unread”, but if you mark all as read, they disappear. I’m a paying customer of EventBox and would like to see this brought back. What were you thinkin’?!

Nevermind, I just discovered the use of folders. I had never used them before in EventBox, but this is a workaround.
