Google Reader Authentication Error
#31.  Posted: 03rd February 2010 03:18 PM

Hi Guys

It appears that Google’s API may be having some issues. We’re looking into them (especially as nothing on the Socialite side has changed) and will keep you in the loop with any updates once we’ve had a chance to look into this further.

Thanks!

Nik

This is the 2nd time this has happened for me. It will become very tiresome if I have to delete/re-add my gReader account every few weeks especially since I have a lot of feeds and Socialite sux at handling them. Yay; beach ball of death for 10 minutes so far as it tries to load google account… sigh

Hopefully next update might make things a bit more ‘permanent’?

Using the application without a google reader account is far snappier than with, both in app response and launch time. The 2nd-last beta was unusable as a reader app so this problem is better but not really solved. It just doesn’t seem able to handle feeds very well. NetNewsWire is far better at loading feeds and has never choked on account access, which is annoying as I really like Socialite’s interface, just not the engine behind it.

I wonder if Socialite is even going to load Google this time… still spinning, lame.

[edit] finally loaded after 12 minutes of beach ball. Can’t say that this is great as I tried NetNewsWire after not using it for about 6 months and it loaded everything fine, so “the google API is changing” doesn’t seem like a reasonable excuse. Sad

I really cannot believe that this issue Socialite users are facing as gone this long without a proposed solution. Socialite is a great product and I was ear to ear when Realmac announced that it would be purchasing this app.

Unfortunately I cannot still say the same. First it was the fact that Twitter was unable to be used with this application for about two weeks now Google Reader has become troublesome for almost a month effecting a majority of users as well.

I feel as if Realmac is not doing a sufficient job responding to these issues nor are they giving us any sort of urgency in fixing the problem.

will keep you in the loop with any updates once we’ve had a chance to look into this further.

Granted I dont know the entire scenario, but I cant imagine that the services Socialite uses such as Flickr, Google Reader, and Twitter are going to have an unchanged API from now until the end of the world. With that said, considering that this is just possibly some change in their system, it really makes me wonder why it is taking so long to fix something that will most likely happen again.

It hurts for me to write this, but Realmac has unfortunately lost one of its customers. I wish I could still be smiling ear to ear, but the feeling is quite the opposite these days. I hope that Realmac realizes what a quality product they had purchased from a group of hard working individuals and decide in the future to provide as much support and care as the previous owners once did.

I wish everyone the best,
Anthony

Okay this is getting down right stupid. I am getting this error every couple of days now. And now I can’t even get the error to go away by deleting and re-adding Google Reader. I’ve cleared my keychain a few times and still this error persists. This problem has been going on for weeks at this point and the problem only seems to be getting worse. Given how frequent this error is becoming for me (every couple days now) I highly doubt it has anything to do with Google changing their API. How about fixing your broken product. Honestly if I could I would delete this trash called Socialite and go back to Eventbox.

URGH!  I’ve had this problem off and on for over a month.  Now Google Reader doesn’t work at all!!!  Not cool.  What is taking so long to fix this problem?!?!

I totally have to agree - it fails for me at least once a week. I have to delete and re-add. Today, I’ve done it 3 times! Combine this with Google Reader’s recent inability to refresh in a reasonable time, and I’m starting to think I need to go back to NetNewsWire…

I’ve been getting this error every few days over the last few weeks, but as of tonight, getting rid of the account and re-adding it no longer seems to work.  I’ve tried several times, and I just end up at the same place - incorrect credentials.

Hi Guys

Google Reader’s API did have some downtime overnight: other clients were also affected however we’re able to access Google Reader once again. We’re going to be putting out a beta of Socialite shortly that will include some debug logging included so that we can gather some further information about the Google authentication issues with the aim being to fix them for the final 1.0.3 release.

Thanks!

Okay - was working correctly again this morning without doing anything (other than logging in).

I think that much of the frustration is from past experience of having to remove and re-add the service just to get it to work...then when doing that doesn’t work at all, one believes that the software is to blame, not the API.

That’s great news. If I might suggest: when it’s a problem with Google - say so. That will keep us from deleting/re-adding and all that it entails (rearranging the feeds, etc). It will also tell us to go bother Google and leave you guys alone… Wink

Uhhrg it has happened again to me as well. I’m not sure about the Google API thing still. Perhaps the devs should look into NetNewsWire api integration as that seems to work every single time. Plus it loads a lot faster than Socialite (when Socialite has a gReader account open). I’ve mentioned this before in this thread I know but it’s really annoying as I didn’t just buy this for Twitter et al.

In Realmac’s defence, Byline on iPhone is causing intermittent grievances with connecting to google as well. This all defeats the point a bit really…
