Bugs/annoyances in 1.0.2
Posted: 05th February 2010 02:30 PM

After much trouble with the earlier versions of Socialite things are mostly working now, but there are some things that may be bugs or possibly just unintuitive UI choices:

* The conversation view button is only sporadically available, even though some tweets that don’t show the button are definitely direct replies because there is an “in reply to” link when viewing the tweet online.
I can’t find any pattern to the behaviour of the conversation button showing. I thought it wasn’t showing in searches at all, but then I saw it was for some, but then I noticed that they were only tweets I had sent to others, but in “Mentions” there is one conversation button on a tweet from someone to me. I think the button might be working fine in the main timeline, just not in searches.

* Random yellow stars are showing up. Some tweets have yellow stars as if I’d bookmarked them, but I definitely haven’t. I can’t see any pattern to the appearance of the yellow, it’s not on all tweets. If I click on the star it goes white, if I go to my favourites the randomly yellow starred tweets are not favourites (as they shouldn’t be), and if I actually want to favourite one of these tweets I have to click the star once to make it white and then again to make it yellow and bookmarked.

* Not all tweets show a star to give the option of bookmarking. Is there something in the API that only allows you to bookmark tweets from people you’re following or that are directly to you?

* Retweets are published automatically. They used to just be inserted into the entry box, which I’d much prefer because sometimes I like to add my own commentary, or shorten it if the original tweet doesn’t fit after you add “RT @username”.

I’ve attached screenshots to show the yellowed stars and convo buttons.

The Search API from Twitter is separate from the main one for now. It’s possible that the ‘in reply to’ isn’t shown in the results from the API [note: I’m looking into this to clarify, as there are certain API differences that Twitter are working to work out.]

Is there a way to reliably reproduce this so we can see what’s going on?

Please check this FAQ about Retweets: you can now use Quote Tweet to emulate the “Classic Retweet”.

Thanks!

Nik,
In my experience, the random stars in the Twitter feed appear to be a bug with Twitter and the new re-tweet functionality. If someone sets the favorite tag on a tweet and then re-tweets it, it shows up on my feed as if I have set the favorite tag as well. I have also seen this occur on Tweetie and Twitterrific on the iPhone.

Well, on the surface I can’t see a pattern to the behaviour of the stars, but I can try to keep track of which tweets get yellow stars etc if that’s of any help to you. Or if you have a proposal to try to reproduce I’m happy to try it.

That’s an interesting observation. Only one of about six yellowed tweets that I can see right now are retweets though.

Just to follow up, there was a tweet in my “mentions” section that didn’t show the conversation button, but was a reply. The tweet was http://twitter.com/cdharrison/statuses/8698313813
So I guess it’s not only the searches where the button isn’t showing.
